Sub-case 01 — Scarcity & Staking
Staking & Attention Economics
Attention is a budget. Connection should cost something.
Overview
High-volume, no-cost swiping creates an inconsistent attention market: low-effort behaviors create noise for high-intent members, inducing attention fatigue, drop-off, and rapid churn. By applying resource scarcity and steady pacing, this mechanism transforms passive browsing into deliberate, high-curiosity action without eliminating the familiar discovery experience.
Problem statement
The Problem: Mindless swipers send high volumes of low-effort signals at zero cost, forcing high-intent members to absorb the tax of profile fatigue, inbound noise, and ghosting.
The Strategic Hypothesis: capping daily interactions forces users to pick who they actually care about connecting with. Pushing low-intent swipers to drop off or adjust their behavior clears out the noise, raises match quality, and keeps real connection at the center of the platform.
System mechanics
Finite Token Mechanics
Members operate on a daily or earned token budget. Browsing profiles is free, but sending outbound likes or icebreaker intros requires staking tokens.
Pacing & Recovery Rate
Tokens replenish on a steady, controlled cadence to curb low-intent spam and build healthy return habits. Accumulation is capped to prevent hoarding, while deliberate actions — like filling out profile depth or maintaining verified status — offer predictable bonus refills.
Intent Staking
Members can stake extra tokens on a single profile to show genuine interest, letting the recipient know the match was deliberate rather than wide spray.
Value exchange
What the user gets
- —Protection from attention fatigue, inbox clutter, and low-effort spam
- —Clear, high-signal feedback when someone intentionally chooses to connect
- —A paced, manageable discovery rhythm that prevents swipe burnout
What the business gets
- —Higher 30-day user retention and deeper overall conversation quality
- —A core product loop that keeps free pools active, healthy, and high-value without paywalling basic utility
- —Clear monetization levers for paid members (higher resource caps, advanced pacing controls, and extra safety preferences)
Metrics & evaluation
North Star
Staked Intent Activation Rate. Percentage of staked tokens/intros that successfully convert into an active connection step — either unlocking an Exploration phase or opening a Direct Message.
Primary metrics
- —14-day Conversation Continuity Rate (chats/explorations extending past 48 hours)
- —Ratio of Tokens spent on Intent Staking vs. passive profile browsing (DAU)
- —First-week match/exploration conversion rate (New Users)
- —Return frequency jumping from 1x/week to 3x/week (Occasional Users)
Guardrail metrics
- —Daily users feel artificially starved of tokens (turning healthy pacing into a frustrating penalty that drives session drops)
- —Occasional users log in after days away, find empty balances, and abandon the app entirely
- —New users run out of tokens on Day 1 without understanding why and churn
Strategic trade-offs
| Decision | Alternative considered | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Finite daily token budget | Unlimited free likes (status quo) | Scarcity protects members from attention fatigue, inbox clutter, and low-effort spam — making intentional connections legible as high-signal feedback. |
| Capped accumulation with steady recovery cadence | Unlimited token accumulation | A controlled refill rate curbs low-intent spam and builds healthy return habits; capping prevents hoarding while deliberate actions earn predictable refills. |
| Free core loop; monetization via higher caps and controls | Paywalling basic utility | The free pool stays active, healthy, and high-value, while paid members get clear levers: higher resource caps, advanced pacing controls, and extra safety preferences. |
